"I sing of arms and the man..."

So begins THE original odyssey, the hero journey to end all hero journeys.  In his travels, Odysseus confronts dangers on all levels - the physical, the emotional, the spiritual.  He watches his men devoured by terrifying monsters, endures the horrific storms of a jealous god, and skillfully maneuvers past the manipulation of dazzling, magical beauties - all to return to the arms of Penelope, his one, true love.

Contained below, are links to individual web pages, designed by 9th grade Honors students, representing many of the major voyages, adventures, and characters that make the tale of Odysseus so eternally memorable.

Each page includes several sections:

  • A summary of how the character is involved in the plot of the Odyssey.

  • An analysis of how Joseph Campbell's ideas of hero journey and archetype relate to the character.

  • A summary of other famous myths in which the character appears.

  • An analysis of how and where the character has been alluded to in popular culture.

  • A brief list of relevant links to learn more information about the character.
