As we begin our readings, remember that our course will examine growing up in different decades of American history. Our first novel, Catcher in the Rye, deals primarily with the 1950's. How was this decade different from our current decade? How might that have affected our narrator, Holden Caufield?
You will be placed in one of two groups, a 1950's group or a 2000's group. For your group, research and collect images, facts, and phrases relating to your era in history. Use this data, along with your partners, to create a collage representing popular culture in your time period.

4. Place images in your group's folder.
5. Tomorrow, we'll make collages in class.
*Note: For the 00's group, simply use basic search engines to help you find images. You already have a good idea of what constitutes our current pop culture.![]()

Conclusion:As you begin looking at images from the 00's or the 50's, consider what themes are emerging. What is unique about pop culture from these eras? When we put together our collages tomorrow, we'll highlight some of these differences to get some insight into the world of Holden Caufield.
